Bellingham and White Rock

Who is in the band and what role does each person have?

Russell Jander: Drums

Caleb Sherman:Bass,Keys, BGVs

Ryan Wilson: Lead Guitar

Miles Mattix: Guitar, Keys, Vocals

What brought the band together and when?

Miles and Ryan had been jamming for a long time, but Ryan was in the Coastguard so he could not commit to a band. Ryan finally became a civilian, and he and Miles started looking for bandmates. Miles knew Russell from English classes at WWU and they had jammed a few times. Miles ran into Caleb’s mom at a wedding reception and asked her to ask Caleb if he would play bass in the band. He knew Caleb was great at guitar, and thought the knowledge would transfer to bass, which it did.
What genre, of music do you classify your band as?

Rock

What inspires your music?

For a while, a big inspiration was Boundary Bay’s Oatmeal Stout, but then they changed the formula and it wasn’t inspirational anymore.
The lyrics on the new album are inspired by things that rarely inspire rock n’ roll: guilt, marriage, childbearing, talking fish, miscarriage, lungless freaks, young adult lit (Feed by M.T. Anderson), the poetry of Bruce Beasley.

Who or what influences your band’s sound?

Miles: Sam Phillips, Kristen Hersh, Nympho Boniacs, club rap
Caleb: Black Keys, Arcade Fire, Flaming Lips
Russell: Why, Wilco, Decemberists, Led Zeppelin
Ryan: Michael Jackson, Modest Mouse, Lands Farther East

Where have you toured?

Bellingham, Oak Harbor and Seattle.

How many albums have you released?

Two albums:
1) Rejoice God and The Grandpa
Released in 2008, this is a five song EP. It is rambunctious and virile, and represents some of our happiest memories as a band. We were sure it would make us millions.
2) Self titled.
To be released on May 23rd 2009, this is a ten song album that runs the gamut from shoegazing psychedelia to booty-shaking club synth-rock crunk. We couldn’t be prouder of this album.

Where do you see your band going in the future?

We will definitely be setting up a multi-state tour. Our top priority right now though is to get more gigs in Seattle. We hope that we can keep playing together for many years to come.

What are the highs and lows in your band’s history?

Highs: Recording
Lows: Recording

You’re stuck on a deserted island and forced to listen to one album for eternity. What album would you pick?

I don’t know what we would agree on as a band. I know that Miles and Ryan would agree on There Goes the Atmosphere, by Lands Farther East. We probably all like OK Computer. That’s a safe guess.
