Where have you toured?
Snug Harbor has primarily toured around the Northwest area. We’ve been from Portland to Bellingham, and everywhere in-between. On the local market, funk fans are energetic and generous, however it is difficult to
extensively tour at this point in time due to lack of financial backing. We are working very hard to increase awareness toward this new wave of contemporary funk music, so that we can raise the resources to spread some sweet NW funk to other parts of the country.
How many albums have you released?
We have many live recordings and demo’s floating around from the past year of playing, however we only have one official album at this time. Engineered by Chris Vita at WWU’s Fairhaven, “Sounds From the York” was recorded live in-studio, and released in September of 2009. You can find it on iTunes, Amazon or CDBaby. Snug Harbor is working hard to finish up material for their next release due out in the Summer of 2010. Snug Harbor is planning on grabbing the mastery and legendary skills of Chris Vita one
last time, to release our first full length album, and we are all very excited for it.
Where do you see your band going in the future?
In the immediate future, Snug Harbor continues to flourish because of the overwhelming support of the NW communities… Bellingham especially has made us feel so welcome playing music on stage, that we are constantly finding ways to refine our playing and keep our music enjoyable from all angles.
Snug Harbor is in the process of applying for music festival’s on the West Coast for 2010 and on, as well as continued booking for support of larger groove-based bands on the West Coast. Snug Harbor aims to push ourselves to the limits of our capabilities, as time permits. As far as this wild ride is willing to take us, we will be humbled to continue the experience.
What are the highs and lows in your band’s history?
A lot of our high’s come from the creation in our writing workshops, where we work on certain phrases, chord’s and expressions to build structure and harmony. Our music is meant for people to dance to, so if it doesn’t groove, or make us move, we will scrap it. However, when the music does develop, and we are pushing our musicality to the edge, it is extremely exciting to see it turn into a legitimate song. When we play those songs live and see the crowd’s reaction, that makes us feel high, as the supreme element of groove and the simplicity of funk’s rhythmic elements are shared and expressed to our listeners.
The low’s in Snug Harbor may seem quite obvious to some musicians, and not at all to others. But there is so much involved with making music nowadays, besides the actual music, that distractions, miscommunications and time can often become an issue. Between booking shows, updating websites, sending out press kits, writing to clubs/newspapers/radio stations, merchandise, designs and hanging posters, it is often hard to find time for 7 people to coordinate schedules. I am not complaining in the least though, we would not trade what we have for anything in the world. Our band is blessed to be
in a community that fully embraces such diverse elements of music, dance, art and locality. We always find time for each-other, and we pride ourselves on continued improvement and success within the music community.
Support local music, and enjoy that funk!
